From 1990–1991 Abramović was a visiting professor at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Berlin University of the Arts.
From 1992–1996 she was a visiting professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg and from 1997–2004 she was a professor for performance-art at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Braunschweig. Making use of twenty knives and two tape recorders, the artist played the Russian game, in which rhythmic knife jabs are aimed between the splayed fingers of one's hand.

Through the “Emerging Artist” initiative, the application fee will be waived for student artists participating either solo or in conjunction with their school or university.
While students will not be eligible to submit their artwork for jury review in the traditional award categories, students will be eligible to submit their work in the “Emerging Artist” Achievement Award .

She completed her post-graduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Croatia in 1972.
